Uncharted: Golden Abyss Review

just quickly
buy. despite some flaws and missed opportunities, Golden Abyss is quite engaging and its production values are unquestionable. There’s plenty to do to extend the gameplay, the graphics are (mostly) beautiful and the great cutscenes and character development does keep you hooked every time you feel like putting the game down when it starts feeling repetitive.

goods

  • lush environments
  • great detailed graphics
  • checkpoints are nicely spaced for a mobile game
  • gameplay stays true to the series
  • plenty of little things to do that extends the gameplay that isnt boring i.e. taking photos, collecting glyphs, charcoal rubbings etcetcetc
  • good voice acting
  • game gives you manipulation of Drake’s journal notes that keeps track of a lot of things
  • nice character development
  • more attention to the graphical detail than any regular gamer could care for
  • shows off the Vita’s graphical prowess; and in turn signifying that the Vita is capable of churning out graphics that are even more beautiful once developers have more experience with the platform

bads

  • character graphics can look weird at times, seemingly due to the resolution
  • some control options feel unnecessary; while some should not be a choice in order to force the player to consistently make use of a single method e.g. to climb a rope, you can choose to use the more immersive rear touch panel and swipe your fingers in a climbing motion one after the other, but at the same time you can also use the more convenient analog sticks that your fingers are already on and just push Up.
  • this game, yes GAME, is a battery hog. it’s the only game that can cause the Vita to warm noticeably.
  • puzzles are WAY too easy, wasted opportunity in including something more cerebral
  • the leaps Drake does always seem way past impossible
  • combat could get stale, kept alive by cutscenes
  • is worth 2.3gbs on PSN! (your 4gb card is now obsolete)
